Two Southland Boys’ High School students recently completed a transformative three-week Outward Bound course, pushing their limits and discovering new strengths. Their experience offers insight into the challenges and growth that come with stepping outside your comfort zone.
Earlier this term, Quintin McKenzie and Blake McWilliam, had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the prestigious three-week Outward Bound course, thanks to a full scholarship generously provided by a sponsor. Their experience was one of challenge, growth, and unforgettable moments in the outdoors. Below is their reflection on the journey:
" Earlier this term, we had the incredible opportunity to attend a three-week Outward Bound course - an experience that challenged us, inspired us, and helped us grow in ways we never expected. We were fortunate to receive a full scholarship that made this experience possible, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsor who supported our journey.
One of the most unforgettable parts of the course was an overnight white-water kayaking trip. Navigating rapids as a team pushed us out of our comfort zones and taught us how to trust each other and ourselves. We also completed two demanding tramps through rugged terrain, which tested our physical endurance and mental resilience. Being surrounded by nature gave us a new appreciation for the outdoors and reminded us how powerful it can be to disconnect from everyday distractions.
We also went on two sailing trips, where we had to work closely together, adapt to changing weather, and learn new skills on the water. These experiences taught us the importance of communication, patience, and teamwork.
A major highlight was the two-night solo in the bush. Being completely alone in nature gave us time to reflect, think deeply, and discover more about who we are. It was both peaceful and empowering.
Throughout the course, we trained for a half marathon by running 3 km nearly every morning-nine times in total. This daily challenge helped us build not just physical strength, but also mental toughness. Completing the half marathon at the end of the course was a huge achievement and something we’ll always be proud of.
Outward Bound was tough, but it was also one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done. We came away with stronger friendships, greater confidence, and memories that will stay with us forever.
We encourage any Year 12 boy to apply for this scholarship and experience in 2026. "
Their words speak for themselves - this was an experience that will leave a lasting impression for years to come. Southland Boys’ High School is proud of their achievement and grateful to those who make opportunities like this possible.
